I’ve written about the Shangri-La Bangkok many times before but it is a hotel I really like so I thought it was worth another article.
Bangkok is an oasis of hotels where five star properties pop up every few months and so it offers a huge choice of hotels which are very affordable by world standards. So why don’t I try new hotel and just resist being drawn back to the Shangri-La?
I ask myself that every time.
Shangri-La Bangkok is a wonderful experience.
It starts a the airport. I love being picked up by the hotel limousine. You are greeted, the Chauffeur is polite and offers you a cold towel and bottle of water, plus the cars have Wi-Fi access.
The Shangri-La lobby is big and busy but if you stay on the Horizon level it is a nice easy check in with a welcome drink. The Horizon level is a great venue for breakfast as it has amazing views of the river and it also boasts an excellent happy hour in the early evening.
The Shangri-La has many restaurant options to choose from – a fantastic restaurant which is Shangri-La’s signature Chinese restaurant, the Shang Palace; a new rebrand of their Italian restaurant Volti; and downstairs the café which serves a great buffet breakfast, lunch and, dinner.
So saying that why do I always feel the draw to go back to Shangri-La?
It is the friendly staff that remembers you year upon year.
At Shangri-La Bangkok, you feel like you’re on a holiday because the hotel is more like a resort on the river with a huge swimming pool. It really does not feel like a city hotel at all.
Their huge swimming pool guarantees you a space in the sun anytime you want it. Most hotels in Bangkok have limited access to pools if any. The Peninsula Bangkok has a beautiful pool but limited space, while the Mandarin Oriental and Grand Hyatt Erawan are about the only ones I can think of with big enough swimming pool areas.
Another thing which draws me to the hotel is the location. It is close to Silom Road which has everything you need in Bangkok.
The standard of cleanliness is fantastic and the care taken in doing the rooms is very impressive.
But one of the biggest attractions to me is to having dinner at the hotel’s Italian restaurant and spending time in the lobby lounge listening to Lillybeth. She is an absolutely brilliant singer who has been performing there for over 15 years now.
It just all adds up for me.
Listening to music, watching the night River cruises, having a glass of wine, the aroma of the Shangri-La room spray, I’m in heaven.
