Hotel Check In: The Silo Cape Town Penthouse Suite

The Silo Hotel at the V&A Waterfront in Cape Town is a unique property of art, design, culture and celebration. The property was built in the grain elevator portion of the waterfront’s historic grain silo complex and occupies six floors above the Zeitz Museum of Contemporary Art Africa (MOCAA) which houses Africa’s largest collection of contemporary African art. The same passion for creativity is infused throughout The Silo.

This is a property which blends into its space by effortlessly incorporating the original building, highlighting the spectacular views of the city and matching the area’s historic importance with a sense of optimism for the future.

The property is a product of Owner & Designer Liz Biden’s obsession with color, light, nature and art and as such it reflects her personal style which is both elegant and fun. She manages to blend thoughtful, practical design with whimsical and artful flourishes. The Penthouse sums up her passion for making a space comfortable and stylish.

The exterior of the building was designed by Heatherwick Studio which incorporated epic windows into the facade. Liz Biden has in turn used these signature pieces to create interior spaces which pay tribute to Cape Town’s stunning vistas.

Throughout the suite these lantern-style windows help to create a showpiece of glamor and sophistication. While the interior design adds a sense of whimsy and fun.

The large bedroom is matched by a stunning bathroom purposely built to force you to relax after a long day of exploring the Mother City.

But what’s unique and was really appreciated is the way that the views and attention to detail flow throughout the suite.

From the office to the dining room and onto the large living area, the yellow hues, terrific art and comfortable spaces make the suite a perfect place to chill, entertain or even get some work done.

One of our favourite elements was the way the suite naturally connected one area to the next. The dominating views, natural light, choice of furniture and lay out, all help you to feel connected to the whole suite, yet free to explore your own space. This is perfect for a busy couple on a work/leisure getaway.

The Silo has 34 rooms and 28 keys as certain suites are designed for families or two couples traveling together. The Granary Cafe, Willaston Bar and The Silo Rooftop offer excellent food and drinks with as much attention to detail as the Penthouse’s decor.

We loved our time at The Silo for three main reasons; the management and staff’s friendly, thorough and attentive service, the property’s vibe and energy, and Liz Biden’s curated art and interior design. In a city of great hotels The Silo stands out and the Penthouse’s 2,000+ square feet of comfort sets a new standard for elegance and glamour in Cape Town.
