Why Banyan Tree Samui Just Won One of Thailand’s Top Spa Honors

On Koh Samui, where luxury resorts compete on sea views, private pools and polished service, Banyan Tree Samui has just been recognized for something less visible but increasingly more valuable: how well it helps people slow down.

Recently, Banyan Tree Spa Samui was named “Best Spa Resort – Thailand” in the Global Spa Awards 2026 by UK-based The Luxury Spa Edit. The award was determined by a panel of spa and wellness experts, travel journalists and sustainability specialists, alongside more than 85,000 public votes.

For travelers, it is a useful signal. Thailand has no shortage of beautiful spas. What sets some apart is whether the experience feels like a treatment menu or a true wellness philosophy. Banyan Tree Samui has built its reputation on the latter.

“We are honored to win this award,” said Spa & Gallery Manager Naphasawan Badklang. “Much of the credit goes to each member of the spa team, most of whom came through rigorous training at the Banyan Spa & Wellbeing Academy in Phuket.”

Badklang also credited the Banyan Tree brand’s “Wellbeing Sanctuary” program, which offers guests a more holistic kind of retreat, and its “8 Pillars of Wellbeing” concept: Rest, Nourishment, Connection, Movement, Mindfulness, Growth, Groundedness and Practice.

That philosophy comes to life most clearly at the resort’s signature hydrotherapy circuit, The Rainforest, long one of the spa’s defining experiences. More than a single treatment, it guides guests through a sequence of water jets, saunas, steam rooms, ice fountains and whirlpools, turning recovery into something immersive and almost theatrical.

The award also arrives as Banyan Tree rolls out its new Spa 2.0 concept, which leans further into ancient Asian healing traditions and nature-based rituals.

Following a personalized consultation, each guest now receives a herbal massage oil blended to align with their key wellbeing focus. Treatments also include new signature ritual elements such as a Palm Touch RitualSound Healing Ritual and Breathwork Ritual, with Koshi chimes and Tingsha Tibetan bells used to open and close the experience.

At the end, guests are served tea and offered a purifying foot ritual using Himalayan salt, lemon powder and herbs, a small but telling detail that reinforces the spa’s natural and Asian heritage.

Among the standout treatments is the Sense of Place – Sukhothai Heritage Massage, designed to encourage deep relaxation and flexibility, and featuring a scrub and wrap made from fresh coconut, jasmine rice, turmeric and tamarind. Another favorite, the Royal Banyan, blends Eastern and Western massage techniques to ease tension and boost circulation.

For guests wanting the spa’s full signature experience, the Rainforest Indulgence combines hydrotherapy and massage in an extended restorative journey. It includes a rainwalk, salt scrub and mud bath, followed by a Swiss shower, sauna and ice fountain, before ending with a vitality pool wellness ritual and a tailored massage.

That level of detail clearly left an impression on the judges.

“Along with several members of our expert panel, I have been fortunate enough to visit Banyan Tree Samui personally,” said Lisa Brown, Founder and CEO of The Luxury Spa Edit. “The Banyan Tree brand has long been renowned for its eco-friendly, world-class luxury spa resorts and eight pillars of wellness philosophy, but this resort has something a little magical.

“From the stunning hillside setting, which offers breathtaking views over Lamai Bay, to the spacious pool villas with personal hosts, the resort creates a cocooning haven of calm. Its extensive wellness offering is particularly impressive, and The Rainforest provides an exceptional hydrotherapy experience. I was especially impressed to have my own personal ‘Hydrotherapy Host’ guiding me through each stage of the circuit. The Spa therapists are all trained at the Banyan Spa & Wellbeing Academy, and I’ve always found them to be highly skilled. My Rainforest experience at Samui was one of the best holistic treatments I have ever had. Congratulations to the Samui team on a well-deserved win.”

The spa is part of a resort with 88 pool villas, each with a private infinity pool, set into a lush hillside above Lamai Bay. Banyan Tree Samui also offers three restaurants, including Saffron, recently listed in the 2025 MICHELIN Guide, along with a fitness centre, kids’ club, meetings and events centre, and library.

In a destination filled with luxury, that may be the real takeaway. Banyan Tree Samui is not simply selling pampering. It is selling restoration — and, for now at least, doing it well enough to stand out in one of the most competitive spa landscapes in Asia.
