Vacationing USA: Whacky Wisconsin

If you’re looking for quirky attractions, offbeat oddities and a world of weirdness, then Wisconsin is the state for you!

The place is absolutely crammed with the weird and wonderful to the point where you, as a tourist on vacation, will find it difficult to cram them all in. However, there are a few that you absolutely must make an effort to see…

The World’s Largest Penny

Not only is Woodruff, Wisconsin home to the fabulous Old Stoney’s Northwood Resort, but it is also home to the world’s largest penny – you certainly won’t find any small change there! Costing more than $17,000, which was raised by local students in the 50s, the penny stands 15 feet tall and makes for some excellent vacation photos. This is one whacky attraction you really won’t want to miss when you’re passing through.

See Dr. Evermore’s Forevertron

What else is there to say about this amazing Wisconsin attraction other than it’s the world’s biggest scrap metal art sculpture and a perfect example of outsider art, located in a pretty garden in the middle of the state. This really is one county that loves its large objects!

The Hodag Statue

There is a legend in Wisconsin of a beast known as the Hodag, which has said to have been prowling around the Rhinelander for more than 200 years. Some say the monster is nothing more than a myth, others swear that they’ve seen it with their own two eyes, but whatever the truth of the matter, one thing’s for sure, you won’t want to miss out on having your picture taken next to the statue which immortalizes this weird creature and which is, quite bizarrely, located in the Rhinelander Chamber of Commerce.

Visit the Tristan Magic Theater

If you’re anywhere near Lake Geneva, then not only are you going to want to stay at the Comfort Suites Lake Geneva East, but you should definitely make an effort to visit the Tristan Magic Theater where you will be blown away by some of the best magic, illusions, jokes and intrigue that you have ever experienced in your life. This is a particularly great attraction to visit if you’re traveling with kids, but adults will love it just as much!

Explore the Cave of Mounds

The Cave of Mounds has to be one of the most colorful caves in the world. Home to a vast array of jewel-like stalactites and stalagmites, you’ll want to spend some serious time exploring this world-renowned attraction.

Pay Tribute to the Fiberglass Mold Graveyard

Located in an unassuming field behind a workshop, you will find a seriously spooky collection of huge fiberglass mold leftovers from the work of the Fiberglass Animals Shapes and Trademarks company who own the workshop. Since many of the molds were made for whacky attractions themselves, there are some seriously unusual pieces to be found, and visitors are welcome. Just watch out for the hornets!

Be sure to include these offbeat attractions in your Wisconsin itinerary and your experience of the state will surely be all the better for it – your photo album certainly will!
