Many of us will travel for New Year’s Eve. Whether it’s a winter break, a family holiday or just a quick weekend to celebrate the New Year, many people in our Going Global community will be traveling for the holdiay.
Over the years I’ve been lucky enough to experience New Year’s Eve in Paris, Miami, New York Bangkok and Hong Kong. All were wonderful and each was unique in its’ own way.
So here are some tips
For the firework display of a lifetime there is nothing like staying on the river in Bangkok. To celebrate the New Year they put on a brilliant show. Seriously, these are the most electrifying fireworks I’ve ever seen in my life. They seem to go on and on and on and every time you think it is finally going to be the grand finale, another display of incredible fireworks lights up the sky anew.
For atmosphere there is simply nothing like New York City. Everyone is happy, celebrating and out on the street. If you want to brave Times Square then you can watch the big Waterford Crystal ball drop while seemingly every NEWS station in the world broadcasts it live.
For a romantic New Year’s Eve you have to choose Paris. Here it’s about the love of food and the fantastic flow of champagne. The French celebrate this holiday in a very sophisticated manner; restaurants bring out their best and try to outdo one another. Just know that this means that the set menus are going to be expensive.
Hong Kong is another marvelous destination to ring in the New Year just as long as you don’t mind crowds. Lan Kwai Fong is the place to be. Thanks to the Ex-Pats it is a big drinking evening and honestly I think too many people get crammed into that small place. On the Kowloon side though, the views over the harbour when fireworks kick in is truly amazing. If you are in Hong Kong I suggest staying on an executive level in the InterContinental Hotel and watching the incredible fireworks display with a nice glass of champagne and someone you love.
Miami is another great place to be for the New Year. it’s a different, more relaxed vibe because the morning after does not feel like a hangover, it’s just another beautiful day at the beach.
If you’re going to Miami for just a weekend away make sure you really party it up and hit the best restaurant in town for New Year’s Eve. But if you’re here for a longer beach holiday have then have an early night on New Year’s and save the money and dealing with the crowds for another evening.
Happy New Year’s everyone, here’s to a brilliant 2015 for us all!
