The Mandarin Oriental Pudong is one of the great properties in the world. Forget the elegant and understated service, ignore the the brilliant F&B and Spa opportunities, there are only two things you need to know about this property. The Club Lounge may be the best on the planet and the huge circular bathtubs in the Club Mandarin River View rooms are extraordinary.
The Mandarin Oriental Pudong is on the banks of the Huangpu River in the heart of Pudong’s financial district. The property has both executive apartments and the hotel rooms and suites. It features great F&B offerings such as the Fifty 8° Grill which offer French cuisine, regional Jiang Non dishes at Yong Yi Ting, Asian and international flavours at Zest, afternoon tea at the Riviera Lounge and creative cocktails at Qi Bar, plus a signature cake shop.
Our room was well appointed and reflects the hotel’s sumptuous yet reserved design ethos. It comes with butler service that was instantly responsive but never intrusive. It was perfectly executed.
The bathroom was huge with a walk-in shower and this fantastic bathtub with views of Pudong and the river.
The Mandarin Oriental Pudong has a significant commitment to art and celebrates Shanghai’s golden ear of art deco with design cues throughout. On one trip this ode to Shanghai’s Haipai era which marked the city’s renaissance from the turn of the 19th century up until 1950’s. This was characterized with Art Deco buildings, a blossoming arts scene and an open “East meets West” culture.
Shanghai is a 24 hour city today, but we get the sense that 100 years ago it was even more of a party capital.
The Mandarin Oriental Pudong is a great property. In fact it may be too nice. We tend to just hide out and work or relax when we’re in residence. We highly recommend it.
