Flight Check: The MAS Lounge at London Heathrow Terminal 4

Malaysia Airlines (MAS) has 2 direct LHR-Kuala Lumpur flights a day and both are operated by the newest A380 Aircraft which offers Economy, Business and First class options.

MAS has a wonderful oasis of a lounge by Gate 6 which is also available to Oneworld Customers that are Sapphire or Emerald.  Malaysia Airlines joined Oneworld in 2013 and so the network is pretty extensive with major airlines such as Cathay Pacific, British Airways and American Airlines. Flying Malaysia Airlines gives passengers access to a huge network in South East Asia with direct flights from KL to Bangkok, Phuket, Bali, Jakarta, Singapore and into mainland China. Connections are easy in KL and Malaysia Airlines has that lovely Asian mentality of taking very good care of their premium passengers.

Once you arrive at the lounge it feels as if you have already stepped into Malaysia. The flagship lounge in KL is very similar so MAS has kept the brand consistency very well in tact.

There are First class and Business class sections. The First class area is behind glass doors and has a lovely seating section of marble floors with plush Asian Fusion elegance. There is a bar area and sweeping floor to ceiling windows for views of the MAS plane and the runway at LHR. The lounge is not dissimilar to the British Airways Concorde Lounge. The difference though is that the MAS Lounge is not crowded by any means

MAS has a noon flight and an evening flight. The noon flight has breakfast available so you can sample Malaysia’s signature dish Nasi Lemak . There are also trays of fresh fruit, eggs, and smoked salmon. This is very similar to the Business class section other than there is an A la Carte option for First class.

Staff are friendly and efficient and offer a very personal service.  Malaysian Newspapers and International ones are available and there are also plenty of magazines. Wi-Fi is free and champagne is Laurent Perrier, a wonderful choice and an extravagant one for an Airline lounge

There is much competition at LHR T4 as Etihad also brings in their A380 which boasts Economy, Business and First class plus the residence, an apartment in the sky.

Malaysia Airlines holds its own with style though offering true sophistication and grace.

MAS had an incredibly tough year last year and they are unfortunately reducing much of their international network. But London is not a route they plan cut or change the aircraft on which is great news for luxury travelers from Europe.

Malaysia Airlines offers a close service to Singapore Airlines and has a similar feel. I am excited to see how their turnaround goes but in the meantime will continue to enjoy their excellent offering in the sky and on the ground.
