A New Lunch Option in Beijing

Last year when the Topwin Center was just opening, Beyond Yakitori was one of my highlights. Catching up with the owner, Chris Niu, he said that he feels like the restaurant is finally hitting its stride and will be introducing some new dishes and offers over the coming months. Chief among them is expanding their opening hours to also include a weekday lunch service, which officially launches this Monday, April 10th (available Mondays through Fridays).

There are 6 lunch sets to choose from including two salads, two rice based dishes and two noodle dishes (one ramen soup and one stir-fried udon) that come as a bento style set. All 6 sets come paired with either a savoury and comforting side seasonal soup and/or a refreshing side salad. The soup we tasted was a miso cooked cauliflower puree, which Chris says will rotate between different seasonal vegetables. The side salad was exceptional – a delightful combination of charcoal-grilled cucumber and pineapple with chopped chili and coriander that supplied a pleasant pop of flavours.

Almost all the lunch sets are RMB 48 with the exception of the Beyond Salmon Salad, which is RMB 68.

And for the first two weeks of launching these new lunch sets (April 10th-14th and 17th-21st), all sets that are normally RMB 48 will be reduced to RMB 28 and the Salmon Salad will be RMB 48 (instead of RMB 68!)! And amazing steal of a lunch deal, you better start blocking off your lunch hours at Beyond Yakitori for the next 2 weeks. As their offerings will be more limited over the first two weeks of lunch service, I highly recommend making reservations well in advance and they also appreciate pre-ordering so get studying on the menu provided and dish photos below so you know exactly what you want when you call ahead!

RMB 28 (for sets normally RMB 48) + Salmon at RMB 48 (normally RMB 68)

In a private lunch tasting, we got to sample a little from each of the 6 lunch dishes and were really impressed. The proteins are mostly all sous vide and marinated for hours on end so everything is super tender and juicy.

For those looking for something lighter, both of their salads were fantastic. Perfect for Spring, you can get your fill of greens and with a side soup with each, it’s pretty filling! The sous vide salmon is seared quickly before serving and the chicken breast is marinated overnight so both protein options are both healthy and super tasty, especially with the arugula rocket based dressing that Chris created!

For more filling options, you can pick from the two rice-based options or the two noodle options for oodles of udon or soupy ramen.

Out of the 6 options, my choice picks were the two rice sets. The beef tongue was tangy and tender, that miso marinade clearly works wonders! And the egg and minced chicken dish is pure comfort food. A more traditional Japanese dish, this is extremely well executed using the minced chicken from their very popular, signature “Beyond Scotch Egg” dish (available on their dinner menu). While it’s nice to have variety and order a different lunch set every time I plan to come for lunch, it will be difficult to resist the temptation of ordering this Minced Chicken Set every time. So satisfying and so, so flavorful.

In addition to the new lunch service, Beyond Yakitori has plans to host a Terrace Opening Party, which will hopefully also be launching their late-night menu (10:30PM – just past midnight!).

As yakitori is traditionally a late night drinking kind of thing, this is exactly what I’ve been waiting for and you can count on LDS to keep you in the loop! Stay tuned!
