Good News/Bad New For Hyatt Fans in Taipei

The global pandemic has changed a lot of travel plans for hundreds of millions of travellers, while also wreaking havoc on business plans for many travel companies. But along with the sudden shock created by COVID-19, hotels and hoteliers are also buffeted by other business drama. We’re happy to report that an on-going saga with the Grand Hyatt in Taipei, one of our favourite hotels, has been solved. But a planned Andaz and Park Hyatt for the Taiwan city has been scuttled, so ultimately it’s good news/bad news for Hyatt fans in Taipei.

After a protracted dispute and a lot of rumours, the Grand Hyatt Taipei will remain a Grand Hyatt as the ownership company finally extended their management deal with Hyatt. Going back several months there were rumours that the Grand Hyatt’s owners were walking as Hyatt was planning on developing a Park Hyatt and Andaz in Taipei, and the Grand Hyatt’s owners didn’t like the competition.

As it turns out, the current climate has unfortunately killed the Andaz and Park Hyatt plans. The development will now become commercial office space, which is at a premium in Taipei.

As we’ve mentioned before, we really like the property and have given rave reviews to the Grand Hyatt Taipei. It’s a large property with great food and beverage options, excellent service, a prime location, and ne of the nicest Grand Clubs in Asia. And so while we would have loved the option of an Andaz and Park Hyatt in Taipei, given the current travel climate, it’s nice to see an old fav remaining open.

Here’s the original story, recently updated. In the end, this is good news/bad news for Hyatt fans in Taipei, but a great property will remain open, so we consider that a win.
